Our second TAU release features two original compositions by Brooklyn-based percussionist Austin Vaughn. Austin has worked and performed with a wide range of artists, including Jandek, Aaron Dilloway, Robert Turman, Peter Blasser, Miguel Frasconi, Ashcan Orchestra, Tristan Perich, and Rafiq Bhatia. In this release Vaughn teams up with producer Alexander Overington.
Four-Track is a study utilizing the capabilities (namely variable speed/pitch) of a four-track cassette machine. The piece presents a series of small exercises for a multi-tracked percussion quartet. Each take was recorded using different and sometimes unfixed tape speeds, so that in the final presentation each voice becomes subject to individuated scales of speed and pitch. Austin describes the process as “...rather quick and dirty. I came in with couple sheets of paper, each containing with one giant staff featuring some graphic notation. The spaces on the stave each corresponded to a track on the tape. Alex and I tracked this in a couple hours and then did all of the mixing and editing the next day.”
Solo attempts to capture the intensity of Vaughn’s live sets. “Side B is not unlike what I do live. This is a catalog of the solo vocabulary that I've been developing on drumset - an unconstructed row of building blocks, or a series of monoliths. In front of an audience, I challenge myself to maintain a flow and connect the dots between sections.”
